“Lessons Learned: One Association’s Journey to Build a Non-Profit Foundation”

Last year, ACTFL—the largest association in the world for language teachers—decided it should launch a foundation. But why? How?

In this AFG webinar, you’ll learn the entire story of how The Language Connects Foundation came to be. You’ll hear from three key players: the new Director of the foundation; a fundraising expert guiding the development strategy; and the marketing firm that gave the foundation its name, brand, and messaging.

This webinar will explain the thinking behind each key milestone in the foundation’s creation — from the initial seed of an idea through planning, branding, hiring, technology, and launch. You’ll hear specific examples of the mistakes that were made, the successes that were realized, and the lessons learned along the way.

This is ideal for any association professional with an interest in launching a new foundation or taking their current foundation to new levels of influence and prestige.

By the end of this session, you’ll know how to

  1. Map out the important milestones for designing and launching an association foundation
  2. Design your foundation’s brand
  3. Launch your foundation with as much pomp and circumstance as possible (on a budget)

PRESENTERS:

Kit Hall, CFRE, Director, Language Connects Foundation

The Language Connects Foundation’s mission is to elevate the language education profession and promote the transformative power of language learning, via greater support for language educators, broader access to language learning, and deeper connections across communities and cultures. Serving as chief administrative officer of the Foundation, Kit is responsible for planning, managing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the Foundation’s operations and programs in support of its mission by securing funding to expand and deepen language education in the U.S. As a member of – and in collaboration with – ACTFL’s senior leadership team, Kit develops and implements comprehensive foundation policies, creates corporate/foundation fundraising campaigns/strategies, solicits major gifts, and ensures that all foundation operations are in legal and financial compliance.

Barbara O’Reilly, CFRE, Principal, Windmill Hill Consulting

Barbara brings to her clients nearly thirty years of major gifts, annual funds, and campaign fundraising experience at major non-profit organizations including Harvard University, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Oxford University in England, and the American Red Cross. Windmill Hill Consulting helps non-profits cut through the noise and develop a profitable fundraising strategy that focuses on the resources, skills, and tactics they need to build more effective donor relationships and catapult their revenue.

Andrew Buck, Associate Creative Director, Mighty Citizen

From an early age, Andrew has been obsessed with words—considering a mastery of language key to mastery of thought. That’s why he studied English and Communications at The University of Texas before beginning a long career in the world of nonprofit marketing and fundraising. Eventually, he combined his love of words with his love of performance to become a software trainer, traveling the country teaching fundraisers how to better manage their data. At Mighty Citizen, Andrew plays a dual role: helping craft our own marketing content and partnering with our clients on a variety of content projects—including research, messaging, strategizing, branding, and content governance.
