Join AFG to learn more about ASAE Research Foundation’s new findings about catalyzing innovation externally. An association foundation active as an innovation incubator will share insights from their organization’s experience. Learning objectives for attendees are:
- Gain understanding of “external innovation.”
- Build awareness of eight roles in which associations and affiliated organizations can support “external innovation.”
- Identify the six steps to catalyze “external innovation.”
- Learn about programmatic models and funding strategies association foundations can use to serve as innovation incubators.

Liz is an accomplished strategist and nonprofit leader with deep experience in consensus-building across cultures, countries, and languages. As Executive Director and CEO of Soroptimist International of the Americas, Inc. Liz was the architect of increasing this membership organization’s collective impact across 20 countries. She used her communications skills and cultural awareness to run a successful change-management campaign. The results included building a new business model, increasing organizational capacity, expanding revenue streams, and strengthening fundraising. Her team’s award-winning work has been recognized with ASAE’s Innovation Award and ASAE’s Power of Association’s Summit Award. Liz also served as Executive Director of the American Massage Therapy Association and their research foundation. Under her leadership, the organization’s net assets tripled. Elizabeth has held consulting roles with Ideas for Action LLC and as principal of the Alta Vista Group. She holds an MBA with a focus in Global Business and Organizational Behavior from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
Steve Ewell, Executive Director, CTA Foundation
Steve Ewell is the executive director of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) Foundation, a charitable foundation with the mission of linking seniors and people with disabilities with technology that can enhance their lives. He joined the CTA Foundation at its start in January 2012. Prior to joining the CTA Foundation he served in other nonprofit leadership roles including managing director of the InfraGard National Members Alliance and Business Executives for National Security. Steve graduated from Drew University with a Bachelors of Arts and earned his MBA and Masters of Science in information and telecommunications systems from Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School. He serves on the Advisory Councils for the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering (CIDE) at University of Colorado and the Enhancing Neurocognitive Health, Abilities, Networks & Community Engagement (ENHANCE) at Weill Cornell.
Stephen E. Peeler, CFRE, FCEP, Executive Director, IDSA Foundation
Stephen has led the IDSA Foundation since 2019. ISDA Foundation is the charitable arm of The Infectious Diseases Society of America, an 11,000-member society representing ID practitioners throughout the world. Peeler has over 20 years of experience working with non-profits and in the field of development, most recently as vice president of membership and development at the National Club Association and managing director of the NCA Foundation. In this position, Peeler led membership, meetings, marketing, fundraising, sponsorships and partnerships. Prior to the NCA, Peeler was the vice president of development at ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership and the ASAE Foundation where he led all fundraising and development programs, campaigns and special events, expanded donor and volunteer relations, and managed recognition programs.

Natalie is a Past President of AFG with 17 years of experience implementing development strategies that allow her clients to fundraise well to do good in their community. Her prior roles include Director of Development at ASCRS Foundation and past Executive Vice President at American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Coin Laundry Association and LaundryCares Foundation received a Power of A Summit Award in 2020 for their work to engage children and whole families in meaningful reading activities during their weekly visit to the laundromat. The Chicago Dental Society Foundation received a Power of A Gold Award in 2019 for the CDS Foundation Dental Clinic, which provides dental care to low-income residents of DuPage, Cook and Lake counties. And in 2018, The Actuarial Foundation received a Power of A Summit Award for its Math Motivators Tutoring Program, which provides free math tutoring to low-income middle and high school students who are paired with volunteer experts in the mathematical field.
